Bull riding was the sideshow
The real star of the show was the rodeo clown, who filled every moment a bull wasn't out of the chute with joking and warming up the crowd. Each ride lasts about 8 seconds at best. Are Slayr audiences so dimwitted they can't enjoy hearing announcers give more about the background of the riders and the bulls, and the ranches the bulls came from? The opening musical act lasted almost 45 minutes (and it was barely safe for families). Slayr put the emphasis on non-bull riding related chatter and entertainment, despite all the hype on the radio about the athleticism of the riders and bulls. I'd say the riding action honestly took up about 10% of the 3+ hours at Ford Field. Intense marketing of sponsor products was also a large part of the between-ride space filler. The rides were separated by long spans of chatter and advertising, presumably to fit in commercial breaks for the at-home audience. Again and again, the animal handlers would wait at the ready while the marketing and patter droned on.
I would recommend this to anyone who wouldn't otherwise have the chance to see rodeo events. But I would not recommend it for anyone who really wants the emphasis to be on the sport, on the riders and animal talent. The tickets were cheap, and even my nosebleed seats offered a good view.
